![]() December 9, 2007 – Over the course of the past six days, Andres Duany and his DPZ design team have engaged the surrounding Northeast San Antonio communities on multiple levels. They’ve sat face to face with municipal officials, collected concerns and reality checks from local builders and developers, and talked frankly with neighbors who border the project site. Ultimately, they have armed themselves with all the information they need to accomplish the mandate imposed by developer Gary Cain: To do the best job possible. [ STORY CONTINUES BELOW PHOTOS > ] ![]() A new face on timeless ideasBoosted by the warm reception of initial ideas during Friday night’s “pin-up” presentation, the team is busy refining some of those concepts and accelerating the architectural work that will put a “face” on the streets and public spaces. Aiding in this effort are regional and national designers who’ve joined the DPZ team to refine the preliminary executions.Much of the work being generated takes its cues from the traditional Texas vernacular forms perhaps best demonstrated in San Antonio’s historic La Villita arts village. Ten-hut!The only break in the intense production schedule on Saturday was a trip to Fort Sam Houston to get a feel for life on the Army post. With several branches of the military expanding personnel assigned to the post, growth in Northeastern San Antonio is expected to create new opportunities for retail and restaurants, as well as for new housing choices. |
